UniX transaction processing (X-tp) is best described as a transaction processing monitor.

X-tp is also part of a strategy for building on-line (transaction processing, interactive) application systems and packages which are portable across a number of different computer architectures.

This document gives a general outline of X-tp as a concept, with minimal technical detail. The companion documentation "X-tp Programming Guide" describes how to use X-tp in programming terms, more as an introduction than as a reference manual - and without reference to specific implementations of X-tp.

"X-tp Reference Manual" describes the formal function CALLs from COBOL to X-tp and the standard data structures supported by X-tp. Again, this concentrates on portability and features of particular versions of X-tp are avoided as far as possible. Particular versions of X-tp have complementary documentation - e.g. "X-tp/UNIX" for UNIX (trademark of AT & T) and "X-tp/VMS" for VMS on VAX (trademarks of Digital Equipment Corporation). This level of documentation includes features that may not be portable.
